The catchy, upbeat song was created and recorded by the Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies specifically for The Big Bang Theory. The lyrics ingeniously outline the entire history of the universe in just a few lines, starting with the hot, dense state during the Big Bang, followed by the cooling of the universe over billions of years to allow for the formation of the first atoms, stars, galaxies, and ultimately life on Earth.

As guitarist Ed Robertson explained, “Chuck Lorre (co-creator) is a great musician too, and they asked us to try and describe the entire evolution of the universe in a minute and a half. We tried to squeeze it all in there – the Big Bang, atoms, stars, life on Earth.” The full-length theme clocks in at around 1 minute 20 seconds.

While Robertson and bandmate Tyler Stewart never expected their theme song to become such an iconic part of the show’s identity, they feel honored to be closely tied to the wildly successful sitcom. As Stewart said, “The entire cast and crew has been amazing to us. We’ve visited the set, played cast parties, they’ve made us feel like part of the Big Bang Theory family.”

The theme song was initially released in 2007 to coincide with the show’s debut. A full album version appeared on the Barenaked Ladies’ 2011 greatest hits album. The song perfectly captured the show’s mixture of intelligence, nerdiness, and humor that made it such a global hit over its 12-season run from 2007-2019.
