Director Wes Ball’s sci-fi offerings have captured the attention of Netflix viewers, with two installments of his Maze Runner franchise currently ranking among the streaming platform’s top 10 most-watched movies globally. As anticipation builds for his next ambitious project, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Ball’s previous work is experiencing a resurgence in popularity.
The Maze Runner Films’ Enduring Appeal
According to ScreenRant, for the week of April 1 – 7, The Maze Runner and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials secured the third and ninth spots on Netflix’s top 10 movies list, respectively. The films, based on James Dashner’s best-selling book series, follow a group of teenagers trapped in a mysterious labyrinthian structure and their subsequent fight for survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
The first Maze Runner movie, released in 2014, was a critical and commercial success, earning $348.3 million at the global box office. While the subsequent sequels, The Scorch Trials (2015) and The Death Cure (2018), saw diminishing returns, the franchise’s enduring popularity on Netflix suggests a loyal fan base eager to revisit the dystopian adventures.
Despite the mixed reception for the later Maze Runner films, the possibility of a fourth installment in the franchise remains open. In 2019, shortly after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the studio confirmed that Maze Runner 4 was in development, though no further updates have been provided since.
The strong performance of the existing films on Netflix could reignite interest in continuing the series, especially with the franchise’s director, Wes Ball, poised to take on another high-profile sci-fi project.
