According to Variety, the beloved animated franchise’s latest installment, Kung Fu Panda 4, proved its staying power by retaining the top spot at the South Korean box office. Despite a 32% week-on-week drop, the film earned an impressive $1.91 million over the weekend, accounting for a nearly 44% market share. With no significant new releases to challenge its reign, Kung Fu Panda 4 remained unchallenged, amassing a cumulative total of $8.48 million after 12 days of release.

While Kung Fu Panda 4 and Exhuma (in second place with $772,000) demonstrated their endurance, the highly anticipated Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire failed to capitalize on its initial momentum. The film’s performance has been lackluster, contributing to an overall slump in the South Korean box office market. Across the nation’s approximately 2,500 cinemas, aggregate weekend revenue fell to a mere $4.37 million, the lowest it has been in over a year.

Other Notable Performances:

  • The Last 10 Years secured third place with $319,000, bringing its cumulative total to $2.87 million.
  • Troll Factory, a Korean crime drama, earned $201,000 in its fourth weekend, with a $6.65 million cumulative.
  • Dune: Part Two grossed $146,000, accumulating $16.9 million since its February 28 release.

The box office is expected to receive a significant boost from the release of The Roundup: Punishment on Wednesday, the fourth installment in the popular Don Lee-starring crime comedy action series. However, the wider pattern of tentpole-dependent seasonality may raise concerns about the overall health of the market.
