Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Director James Mangold Addresses Mixed Reception
Released in May 2023, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny struggled to resonate with fans, largely due to audience discomfort with a portrayal of an aging hero.
Director James Mangold remarked, “You have a wonderful, brilliant actor who’s in his eighties… But the question is how would anything have made the audience happy with that, other than having to start over again with a new guy?”
Mangold recalled the “joyous experience” of collaborating with Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg, but the criticism of the film’s themes of closure left him feeling disappointed.
Reflecting on the film’s message, Mangold said, “It hurt in the sense that I really love Harrison and I wanted audiences to love him as he was… that things come to an end, that’s part of life.”
Despite Mangold’s sentiment, the movie struggled to meet expectations financially and critically, becoming a rare misstep for Disney.

Behind-the-Scenes Camaraderie
The movie features a talented cast, including Mads Mikkelsen as Jurgen Voller, a former Nazi turned NASA scientist, alongside Indiana Jones’ goddaughter, portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Mikkelsen shared humorous moments from the set, noting that Ford once jokingly called him out as a Nazi in front of the crew.
Despite these lighthearted moments, the film faced significant financial hurdles. With a production and post-production budget of $387.2 million, the movie earned only $384 million globally. Given that studios typically receive around half the box office revenue, Disney is estimated to have lost $134.2 million on the project.
