Jake Gyllenhaal is honoring the memory of the late Patrick Swayze, his co-star from the 2001 film Donnie Darko, as the release of his highly anticipated Road House remake approaches.
Jake Gyllenhaal Pays Tribute to a Beloved Actor
According to Entertainment Weekly, in an Instagram post on Sunday, Gyllenhaal paid tribute to Swayze, reflecting on their time working together and expressing his admiration for the iconic actor.
“I’ve been thinking back about my time working with Patrick on Donnie Darko, and rewatching this great man in the original Road House plus so many other films. I’ve never stopped being a fan,” Gyllenhaal wrote, accompanying his words with a throwback photo of the two actors.
Gyllenhaal went on to commend Swayze’s kindness and generosity, especially towards a young actor just starting out in the industry. “He was such a talent and I continue to have so much respect and admiration for what he put out and into the world. I’ll never forget his kindness to me when I was starting out— he didn’t have to take the time, but he always did.”
As Gyllenhaal gears up for the release of his highly anticipated Road House remake, he acknowledged the legacy of Swayze’s performance in the original 1989 action classic.
“We’ve made a different RH this time around, but hoping it’s one he would’ve had fun watching!” Gyllenhaal wrote, hinting at the unique take on the beloved film.

In the original Road House, Swayze played a professional bouncer tasked with cleaning up a rundown club in Missouri through violent means. Gyllenhaal’s remake follows a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a dilapidated bar in the Florida Keys.
A Shared Connection Through Donnie Darko
While Gyllenhaal and Swayze’s paths crossed in the 2001 psychological thriller Donnie Darko, their bond extended beyond the screen. Swayze played the role of a motivational speaker named Jim Cunningham in the film, which starred a young Gyllenhaal as the troubled titular character.
Gyllenhaal’s tribute not only honors Swayze’s talent but also highlights the impact the late actor had on his career, serving as a mentor and role model during his early days in the industry.
