After just 10 days in theaters, Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel Dune: Part Two is already barreling toward a significant box office milestone, leaving its predecessor’s performance in the dust.
According to Variety, Dune: Part Two has amassed an impressive $494.7 million globally, including $208 million in North America and $289.4 million internationally. The film is expected to surpass the $500 million mark by Monday, a feat that few releases have achieved in the post-pandemic era.
As of now, Dune 2 stands as the highest-grossing film of 2024 at both the domestic and worldwide box office, setting a high bar for other releases to follow.
Dune: Part Two Outperforming the First Dune
While the original 2021 Dune film garnered critical acclaim, its box office performance was stifled by a hybrid release strategy that saw it debut simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. As a result, the first installment amassed only $108 million domestically and $433 million globally.
In a remarkable turnaround, Dune: Part Two has already surpassed the domestic total of its predecessor after just 10 days in theaters, a testament to the film’s strong appeal and the audience’s eagerness to experience the story on the big screen.
“The fact that ‘Dune: Part Two’ has already outgrossed the entire domestic run of the first film is a clear indication of the franchise’s growing popularity,” said industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
