Michael Keaton on ‘Beetlejuice 2’ Success
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continues its remarkable box office performance, crossing $420 million globally since its release in early September. Michael Keaton, who reprises his role as the mischievous and politically incorrect Betelgeuse, reflected on the film’s success, expressing both pride and surprise. Despite not predicting the film’s massive success, Keaton admitted he always believed in the character’s potential to resonate with audiences once more.
In an interview with Collider, Keaton shared,
“I knew it would do well. There’s no way I knew it would do this well… For years, I never understood, just from a cold-hearted business point of view, why they wouldn’t pull the trigger on what I would say was about the only thing I would wanna do again is that movie.”
He further elaborated on his long-standing desire for the sequel.

Michael Keaton’s Long Push for the Sequel
Keaton’s persistence in advocating for Beetlejuice 2 wasn’t just rooted in nostalgia. He genuinely believed the character and the world Tim Burton created still had appeal. “I made a push for it for a few years there,” Keaton said, explaining that while at times he thought the moment had passed, he still believed in the material. Reflecting on his connection to the film’s fans, he shared, “I always knew. You’ll be out, and somebody will say something like, ‘Oh, Beetlejuice!’ It’s my favorite thing!”
The success of Beetlejuice 2 can also be attributed to its stellar cast. Along with Keaton, the film sees the return of Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz, and new additions like Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, and Willem Dafoe as ghost detective Wolf Jackson.
