Capcom Boldly Increases Salaries Despite Industry-Wide Layoffs Wave

Opposing the trend of widespread layoffs and cost-cutting measures plaguing the gaming industry, Japanese gaming giant Capcom has unveiled a bold move to increase salaries for its employees, both new and existing, in a remarkable display of confidence and investment in its human capital.

Key Points

  • The starting salary for new graduate hires will be raised from ¥235,000 (around $1,560) to ¥300,000 (around $2,000) per month, effective from the 2025 fiscal year.
  • Current employees, including those joining in the 2024 fiscal year, will receive a one-time special payment as an investment in the company’s future workforce.
  • Existing salaries will also be raised in the 2024 fiscal year, with an average increase of more than 5%.

According to a statement from Capcom, “With this increase in starting salary, Capcom is pursuing further investment in human capital and the acquisition of exceptional talent.” The company plans to raise the starting salary for new graduate hires from the current ¥235,000 per month (around $1,560) to ¥300,000 per month (around $2,000), effective from its 2025 fiscal year. Additionally, Capcom has announced that current employees, including those who join in the 2024 fiscal year, will receive a “one-time special payment,” described as “an investment in the people who support the future of the company.”

Capcom’s Commitment to Employee Welfare and Financial Success

This recent move follows Capcom’s efforts to enhance employee compensation and recognize their contributions. In April 2022, the company increased employees’ average base salaries by a substantial 30% and introduced a new bonus system more closely tied to the company’s business performance. At the time, Capcom stated that the move was an attempt “to address the issues facing our society while aiming to improve its corporate value and establishing a relationship of trust with employees and stakeholders.”

Capcom’s financial success has likely played a role in this decision. In October 2023, the company noted that the first half of its current fiscal year was strong enough to keep it on track for its 11th consecutive year of operating income growth, thanks to healthy launch sales of titles like Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 (remake), as well as continued digital sales of its older games.

Capcom’s next major release is Dragon’s Dogma 2, scheduled for launch on March 22, 2023, followed by Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025.
