Collaboration between Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu for a Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures project

According to reports from Deadline, few details are known about the top-secret project beyond it being an original story written by Iñárritu along with his frequent collaborators. This includes scriptwriters Sabina Berman as well as Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, who co-wrote Iñárritu’s 2014 Best Picture winner Birdman.

What is clear is that Cruise moved quickly to sign onto the film once he learned Iñárritu was meeting with actors. The new project will be Cruise’s first since announcing his strategic partnership with Warner Bros. last month to develop event films for the studio.

The untitled film will also mark Iñárritu’s return to Hollywood filmmaking following a break after the smash success of 2015’s The Revenant, for which he won his second Best Director Oscar.

While Cruise has focused recently on major action tentpoles like the Mission: Impossible series, he’s no stranger to working with prestigious directors on riskier material, from Stanley Kubrick to Paul Thomas Anderson.

Per reports, the chance to create something original with a visionary like Iñárritu aligns with what Cruise and Warner Bros. hope to achieve in their new creative partnership. And given Iñárritu’s reputation for drawing acclaimed performances and awards attention, the film could also mark a return to the Oscars for Cruise.

For Iñárritu, the untitled film with Cruise marks his first major Hollywood production since 2015’s The Revenant grossed over $500 million worldwide and earned Leonardo DiCaprio his first Academy Award.

Iñárritu took a break from large-scale filmmaking following the success of Birdman and The Revenant to work on more personal projects like the semi-autobiographical Bardo for Netflix. But with this star-driven original story backed by Warner Bros., he appears ready to return in a big way.
