The ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ is set to hit theaters next year, but director Wes Ball has revealed that the film’s title was initially conceived differently. In a recent interview, Ball shed light on the creative process behind the movie’s title and discussed the possibility of future installments in the beloved franchise.
What was the original title for ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’?
In an interview with Comicbook.com, Wes Ball disclosed that his original title for the upcoming film was ‘Empire of the Planet of the Apes.’ However, he mentioned, “We couldn’t do it, we just couldn’t.” Ball also joked about the limitations of adding too many words before “of the Planet of the Apes” in a title, emphasizing the franchise’s long-standing naming convention.
While addressing the possibility of future sequels, Ball expressed optimism, stating, “It’ll take as long as it takes. Fortunately, because this franchise is important to the studio, we’ll get it right like we did this one, took our time, and got it right.” He emphasized the importance of having a completed script before entering production, noting that rushing into pre-production without a finalized script can be detrimental.
Ball further elaborated, “Fortunately, we were thinking a lot about these questions when we were developing this script, so we have an idea where we wanna go, and there’s lots of room for great drama. Literally, doors have opened at the end of this movie that hopefully reveal a much larger world that we get to explore in this movie, full of drama, full of conflict, all that kind of stuff. Fingers crossed. We’ll see.”
