The long-running legal battle between former Dota 2 star Sumail ‘SumaiL’ Hassan and his former team Evil Geniuses (EG) has finally reached a conclusion, with the jury ruling in favor of the esports organization.
SumaiL’s Lawsuit Against Evil Geniuses
According to Dexerto, In December 2021, SumaiL filed a lawsuit against EG over a contract he signed with the organization in 2016, shortly after winning The International 2015 – one of the biggest accomplishments in Dota 2 esports. At the time, SumaiL was considered one of the best players in the world. SumaiL’s lawyers claimed that EG “took advantage of a young, naïve and vulnerable” player during his time with the organization, alleging that the team pushed “draconian obligations and forfeitures” during negotiations for his release from the Dota 2 team in 2020.

Evil Geniuses Prevails in Court
After a two-year legal battle, a jury has ruled in EG’s favor, according to a report by Richard Lewis. The verdict was filed on March 1, marking the end of the high-profile lawsuit. During the trial, EG denied all allegations made against it, claiming that SumaiL was advised to consult a lawyer before signing the contract. The organization also stated that it did not attempt to impose malicious terms on the player when he was trying to leave the Dota 2 team, asserting that they provided him with decent financial compensation and a flexible agreement.

SumaiL, now a member of Nigma Galaxy, has appeared at The International five times in his nearly decade-long career but has only one championship win to his name.
