The newly released Gladiator II trailer reveals a crucial plot twist: Lucius, who was previously believed to be the son of Lucius Verus I, is actually Maximus’ son. This revelation comes from none other than his mother, Lucilla, played again by Connie Nielsen, who discloses the truth just as Lucius prepares for a battle in the Colosseum. For fans of the original film, this is a major moment, as it links the new film directly back to Maximus’ legacy.

Paul Mescal, who takes on the role of Lucius in the sequel, shared that director Ridley Scott informed him about Lucius’ true parentage during their early talks.

Mescal admitted that the weight of this revelation was significant, saying, “It’s an affronting thing to see it written on the page, and [to have] that responsibility fall on your shoulders is interesting.” He acknowledges the connection to Maximus but also emphasizes that Lucius’ journey is distinct from his father’s, adding, “Where Lucius is coming from at the start of the film, he has a very different journey than Maximus.”

Lucius’ relationship with Maximus was hinted at in the original Gladiator film, especially in scenes where the young boy (played by Spencer Treat Clark) admired the warrior. Now, with this twist, fans can look back at those moments with new understanding.

Gladiator II sets up Lucius to follow in his father’s footsteps, albeit under different circumstances. In the sequel, Lucius has been sent away from Rome as a child for his own protection. However, after the new tyrants of Rome conquer his home, Lucius is captured and forced into the brutal life of a gladiator, much like his father. The trailer hints at Lucius’ growing resentment towards both his mother and Rome, pushing him toward a path of revenge. Mescal talks about how Lucius grapples with his inherited traits and mannerisms from Maximus.

“The screenplay does a lot of that work for you in terms of the rubbing the dirt between the hands, the kind of DNA, and the genetics that Lucius inherits,” he says.

He adds that while Lucius and Maximus may share some similarities, their journeys are different. Lucius is driven by a desire for vengeance, and the film explores how he plans to fulfill his destiny in the Colosseum.

The trailer also teases the roles of other key characters, including Denzel Washington’s Macrinus, a powerful businessman and gladiator owner, and Pedro Pascal’s General Acacius, who appears to have some mysterious connection to Lucius. Their motivations will likely play a significant part in shaping Lucius’ fate in the arena.

Gladiator II is set to release on November 22, 2024.
