The newly released Gladiator II trailer reveals a crucial plot twist: Lucius, who was previously believed to be the son of Lucius Verus I, is actually Maximus’ son. This revelation comes from none other than his mother, Lucilla, played again by Connie Nielsen, who discloses the truth just as Lucius prepares for a battle in the Colosseum. Paul Mescal, who takes on the role of Lucius in the sequel, shared that director Ridley Scott informed him about Lucius’ true parentage during their early talks.
Mescal admitted that the weight of this revelation was significant, saying, “It’s an affronting thing to see it written on the page, and [to have] that responsibility fall on your shoulders is interesting.” He acknowledges the connection to Maximus but also emphasizes that Lucius’ journey is distinct from his father’s, adding, “Where Lucius is coming from at the start of the film, he has a very different journey than Maximus.”
