- James Gunn denied having a secret plan to remove Henry Cavill from the role of Superman.
- Nathan Fillion’s comments about playing Green Lantern caused confusion over the Superman recasting timeline.
- David Corenswet has been cast as the new Superman in Gunn’s DC Universe, allowing a fresh start for the character.
Amid speculations surrounding Henry Cavill’s departure as Superman, James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has addressed conspiracy theories and clarified the timeline behind the recasting decision.
No Secret Plan to Remove Henry Cavill
According to ScreenRant, in a recent post on Threads, Gunn dismissed the notion that he had a secret agenda to remove Cavill from the role of Superman when he joined the DC Universe. This speculation arose after Nathan Fillion, an actor in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, mentioned being told by Gunn at a wrap party that he would play the Green Lantern Guy Gardner.
Gunn clarified that Fillion’s comments referred to the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrap party, not The Suicide Squad, effectively debunking the conspiracy theory about his intentions regarding Cavill’s Superman.
Timeline Clarification Leads to a Fresh Start
By addressing the timeline confusion, Gunn emphasized that his vision for Superman has always been a new story, separate from Cavill’s portrayal in the previous DCEU. This decision aligns with Gunn’s goal of creating a new DC Universe that is more faithful to the comics and offers a fresh take on beloved characters.
David Corenswet, the actor cast as the new Superman, has previously expressed his desire to portray the iconic hero in a brighter and more optimistic light, echoing Gunn’s plans for the character. Corenswet’s Superman will make his debut in 2025, marking a clean slate for the Man of Steel in the DCU.

While Cavill’s departure from the role has been a point of contention for some fans, the recasting decision allows the DCU to move forward without the baggage of the previous DCEU portrayal, which often faced criticism for its darker and more somber depiction of the character.
Superman is set to make his DCU debut in the 2025 film directed by James Gunn.
