The journey to bring Invincible to the big screen has been a long one, with the project first announced in 2017. In a recent interview with The Direct, Kirkman shed light on the movie’s current status. “It’s still in development. We’re still working with Universal,” he stated. The creator emphasized that the animated show’s success has raised the bar for the live-action adaptation.

Kirkman explained,

“You know, the show is going so well. I think the movie absolutely has to be perfect. And so, it’s taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and getting everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be.”

This pursuit of perfection is the primary reason for the extended development period.

While the delay might disappoint some fans, Kirkman assures that it’s necessary to create a distinct experience.

“Just because, in relation to the show, it has to provide a different experience,”

he elaborated.

“It has to still be true to Invincible in some interesting ways. But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own.”

The creator remains optimistic about the final product, stating,

“And so that’s something we’re spending a lot of time crafting. But I think when it finally happens, it’s gonna be really cool.”

As fans wait for the live-action movie, they can look forward to more animated content. Amazon has renewed Invincible for a fourth season, with the third season already in production. Kirkman teased that the upcoming season will see storylines from the first two seasons coming to a head, promising high stakes and dense content.
