How Wes Ball Breathed New Life into Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes?
While the Planet of the Apes franchise has captivated audiences for decades, director Wes Ball initially had reservations about helming the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes after the previous trilogy’s conclusion. However, his original vision for the film’s story ultimately convinced him to take on the project.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Ball revealed that he was initially approached by the studio to work on the next Planet of the Apes installment after his previous project, Mouse Guard, was canceled.
At first, he turned down the offer, stating, “Honestly? I said, ‘No thanks.’ The trilogy was fine? It was a perfect little thing. It is like, ‘Why do it? I’m not interested in doing a part four. It’s not really fun. It’s not very interesting.”
However, Ball had a change of heart when he came up with a story idea that could do justice to the franchise without being a mere cash grab.
“A week later… ‘I think I know how to do this,'” Ball explained. “It’s a big, bold choice. We’re going to do a giant cut after Caesar has died, but we’re not going to abandon what has come before us, essentially. So we’re still in that same world. We’re still in that universe.”

Exploring Caesar’s Legacy and New Awakenings
Ball’s vision for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes explores the legacy of Caesar, the iconic ape leader from the previous trilogy, centuries after his death. The film delves into how Caesar’s stories, teachings, and the remnants of his civilization have endured over time.

Additionally, Ball introduces a character with no direct connection to Caesar, suggesting that other apes across the globe are experiencing their own awakenings and journeys into intelligence.
“A character shows up who isn’t connected to Caesar at all,” the director explained. “So it suggests [that] across the globe, there are other apes that are having their own awakenings. They’re having their own kind of journeying into intelligence.”
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters worldwide on May 10.
