Kirsten Dunst Shares Candid Details Behind Iconic ‘Spider-Man’ Upside-Down Kiss
In Sam Raimi’s 2002 superhero film Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire brought to life one of the most iconic movie kisses of all time. As Spider-Man hangs upside down, Mary Jane removes his mask halfway to plant a passionate “thank you” kiss in the pouring rain.
However, according to Deadline, Dunst recently revealed that the moment was far from romantic, at least for her. Appearing on ITV1’s ‘The Jonathan Ross Show,’ the actress candidly reflected on the struggles behind the unforgettable scene.
“It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe, so it was almost like I was resuscitating him,” Dunst recalled.

Director’s Efforts to Make the Kiss Special
Despite the challenging conditions, Dunst acknowledged director Sam Raimi’s efforts to make the kiss a standout moment.
“I remember [Raimi] giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired, but also he really wanted to make it special, even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it,” she shared.
The Spider-Man franchise, which spawned two sequels (Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3), is credited with redefining the modern superhero genre and setting the stage for the era of summer blockbusters.
