Upgrading your armor in Monster Hunter Wilds is essential for improving your defense and surviving tougher hunts. This guide explains when armor upgrades become available, how to upgrade your gear using Armor Spheres, and whether you should spend or save them.
When Can You Upgrade Armor in Monster Hunters Wild?

You unlock the ability to upgrade armor during Chapter 2-1, “Toward Fervent Fields.” This main story mission tasks you with finding Maki and hunting your first Rompopolo in Azuz. Upon returning from the hunt, Gemma will introduce you to armor upgrading at the Smithy and explain the use of Armor Spheres.
How to Upgrade Armor in Monster Hunter Wilds

Step 1: Access the Smithy
Visit any Smithy and select the “Forge/Upgrade Armor” option from the menu.
Step 2: Select Armor to Upgrade
- Any armor piece you’ve crafted will be marked with a red chest icon if stored or a yellow checkmark if currently equipped.
- Click on the armor piece you wish to upgrade and select the “Upgrade” option.
Step 3: Use Armor Spheres
In the upgrade menu, you will see:
- Your available Armor Spheres, their point values, and quantities.
- The selected armor piece, its current upgrade level, max upgrade level, and points required for the next upgrade.
- Armor stats, showing how its defense increases with each upgrade.
Armor Spheres have different values:
- Standard Armor Spheres – 10 points
- Armor Spheres+ – 50 points
- Advanced Armor Spheres – 200 points
Upgrade your armor by applying enough Armor Spheres to reach the required threshold. Higher upgrade levels demand more points.
Step 4: Confirm and Apply the Upgrade
Once you’ve allocated the required points, confirm the upgrade. The armor’s defense will increase, but its skills and elemental resistances will remain unchanged.

Should You Spend or Save Armor Spheres?

According to Gemma, “If you’re fainting left and right, [upgrade] your armor.” This means Armor Spheres should be used to enhance survivability when needed. However, since new armor sets become available frequently, avoid maxing out every piece early on. Instead, upgrade only what’s necessary to get through difficult hunts.
