At the Netflix Upfront presentation, the streaming service announced that their next collaboration with Adam Sandler will be ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ The sequel to Sandler’s 1996 comedy ‘Happy Gilmore’ will see the actor reprising his iconic role as the title character, an unlikely golf champion.

The announcement was accompanied by an image of Happy Gilmore screaming at a golf ball while it rolled toward the hole, confirming Sandler’s involvement in the project. While rumors of a ‘Happy Gilmore’ sequel have circulated for years, Netflix has officially confirmed that the movie is moving forward.

While a Sandler-Netflix title being a sequel isn’t entirely new, with the actor reuniting with Jennifer Aniston for a sequel to their hit comedy-thriller ‘Murder Mystery’ in 2023, ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is unique among these other Netflix titles. It is the only movie on the roster to be a sequel to a title that wasn’t already a Netflix property.

Sandler has been a mainstay of Netflix original comedies since 2015 thanks to a deal between his production company Happy Madison and the streamer. However, with the exception of ‘Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation’ and ‘Uncut Gems,’ every movie starring Adam Sandler since that point has had involvement from Netflix.

Because it was likely more difficult to wrangle the rights to make ‘Happy Gilmore 2,’ it remains to be seen if they make further sequels to older Sandler movies. If it proves to be a hit, as it very well might considering the fact that the ‘Happy Gilmore‘ Rotten Tomatoes score provides one of his rare Fresh ratings, this could mean further sequels are on the horizon.
