Pedro Pascal was visibly surprised when he won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series at the 2023 SAG Awards for his role as Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us. As the actor took the stage, he admitted to the audience that he was “a little drunk” during his acceptance speech.
Pedro Pascal Tipsily Accepts First SAG Award for The Last of Us Role
As per Variety, Pasca said, he “thought [he] could get drunk” since he assumed he wouldn’t win after Succession star Kieran Culkin had won in the same category at the previous Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.
“This is wrong for so many reasons,” Pascal said. “I’m making a fool of myself but thank you so much for this! I’ve been in the union since 1999 so this is an incredible fucking honor.”
In his inebriated state, Pascal struggled to remember the names of his fellow nominees, simply referring to them as “all of you.” The other Outstanding Male Actor nominees included Culkin for Succession, along with Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen, also for Succession, Billy Crudup for The Morning Show, and Pascal himself.
“To the nominees, all of you, I can’t remember any of your names right now,” the actor said sheepishly.
As Pascal went on to thank his family and friends, he became emotional and predicted he would “have a panic attack.” He then promptly ended his acceptance speech, simply stating: “I’m going to leave.”

True to his word, Pascal’s time on stage was brief. But his heartfelt yet humorously honest words made for yet another viral Pedro Pascal Awards show moment.
Pedro Pascal and Culkin Embrace Friendly Awards Show “Feud”
Pascal’s tipsy speech comes on the heels of an ongoing mock feud with Succession star and frequent award show rival Culkin. Culkin sparked the playful rivalry at the 2023 Golden Globes when he ended his own acceptance speech by declaring “Suck it, Pedro!”
The actors have continued to poke fun at each other throughout the awards season. At the Emmy Awards last year, for example, Pascal sported an arm sling on the red carpet, joking that “Kieran Culkin beat the shit out of me.” After his SAG Award win, Pascal said he planned to “make out” with Culkin as revenge.
While largely tongue-in-cheek, Pascal has made it clear he holds his fellow actor in high regard, calling Culkin “the greatest.”
With a second season of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us set to begin filming later this year, fans can expect Pascal to reprise his role as gruff survivor Joel. However, the new episodes likely won’t premiere until at least 2025.
