Five years after his Oscar-winning triumph with Parasite, acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho addresses the delay of his highly anticipated sci-fi film Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson. The Warner Bros. production’s postponement sparked speculation about potential creative control issues.
Why Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17 Release Was Delayed to 2025?
Contrary to industry rumors suggesting studio conflicts, Bong Joon Ho clarified his creative authority over the project. “With Okja and now Mickey 17, I was given the final cut as part of my deal,” he explained to Empire magazine. “The studio respected my final cut rights.”
The director acknowledged the collaborative nature of post-production while maintaining his creative vision.
“Of course, during the editing process there are many opinions and many discussions that happen,” Bong stated. “But this film is my cut, and I’m very happy about it. It was a long process, but it was always smooth and respectful.”

Mickey 17: A Bold Creative Vision
Mickey 17 represents Bong’s latest English-language venture, following Snowpiercer and Okja. Lead actor Robert Pattinson praised the unique nature of the production, noting, “It’s really cool that a studio has done this film, and that Bong pushed to have the final cut on it — to make something that does feel incredibly unusual.”
The film, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7, continues Bong’s tradition of genre-defying storytelling. Despite the delayed release to 2025, the project maintains the director’s uncompromising creative approach that earned him worldwide acclaim with Parasite.
