Fans of the iconic Planet of the Apes franchise have a reason to rejoice, as the highly anticipated fourth installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has already broken a franchise record ahead of its theatrical release.

According to reports, AMC Theatres has listed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with a runtime of 145 minutes, making it the longest entry in the long-running science fiction franchise to date. This surpasses the previous record held by War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), which clocked in at 140 minutes.

The original Planet of the Apes films, released between 1968 and 1973, had runtimes ranging from 88 to 112 minutes, while Tim Burton’s 2001 remake had a runtime of 120 minutes. When 20th Century Studios rebooted the franchise in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the runtime was a brisk 105 minutes.

Despite being released seven years after its predecessor, audience demand for the Planet of the Apes franchise remains at an all-time high. Box office tracking service Quorum reports that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is tracking for an opening weekend between $54 million and $61 million.

If the film comes in on the higher end of its projections, it would mark the third-best opening weekend for the franchise after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($72.6 million) and Burton’s Planet of the Apes ($68.5 million).

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is envisioned as the first installment in a new trilogy of films, with star Owen Teague confirming that 20th Century Studios and director Wes Ball have already discussed future sequels.

“There are a lot of things that… I mean, obviously I have ideas, Wes has ideas,” Teague shared. “What I can say is that where we leave Noa in this film is he’s kind of got two opposing forces happening within him. There’s two philosophies that he’s really taken in on his journey, and I think it’s going to be exciting to see him grapple with that and find out.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters on May 10.
