Jude Law recently offered a promising update on the long-anticipated Sherlock Holmes 3. While a final production date is yet to be announced, Law confirmed a new script is ready, hinting at progress for the threequel.

During an interview with The Playlist to promote his new film, The Order, Jude Law shared details about the development of Sherlock Holmes 3. According to Law, the project has seen many iterations over the years, including previous plans involving time travel. However, he confirmed the completion of a new script, though he has not read it yet.

In the interview, Law stated:

“There’s a great will to make it. And a great will amongst us all to get it right… I think there’s a new iteration of the script I haven’t yet read. And then there’s a case of ‘How expensive is it? And can we get it made?’”

While the new script represents progress, financial concerns remain a hurdle for the film. The franchise’s rising production costs—$90 million for the first film and $125 million for its sequel—present a challenge, especially with Downey Jr.’s significant salary demands.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Schedule and Franchise Challenges

Robert Downey Jr.’s busy schedule further complicates the path forward for Sherlock Holmes 3. Having re-entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom, Downey Jr. is set to appear in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Avengers: Doomsday, and Secret Wars. Balancing these commitments with the demands of the Sherlock Holmes franchise could delay production.

Additionally, Susan Downey, one of the franchise producers, reiterated earlier this year that the film’s delay is due to finding the right story:

“There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”

Despite these challenges, Law emphasized the camaraderie he shares with Downey Jr., noting:

“The one great thing I took from both of those films is my friendship with Robert [Downey Jr.]… The experience of working with Robert… is extraordinary.”
