Disney has shuffled its 2026 release calendar, replacing a planned December Star Wars movie with Ice Age 6. While The Mandalorian & Grogu remains scheduled for May 2026, the decision signals delays for other Star Wars projects, such as Daisy Ridley’s rumored New Jedi Order film. Lucasfilm now looks to December 2027 for its next major release.
Disney Shifts Star Wars Release to Ice Age 6
Disney recently updated its 2026 slate, confirming the December 18 slot initially assigned to a Star Wars movie will now feature Ice Age 6. This follows uncertainty surrounding Star Wars projects, including delays caused by changes to the writing team for Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order.
Lucasfilm originally announced three films at Star Wars Celebration 2023, including The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau. Set to release on May 22, 2026, the film is positioned as a critical return to the big screen. Despite speculation that this project might move to December, the slot has instead been reassigned to Pixar.
“It wasn’t certain that [the December 2026 release] pertained to the continuing adventures of Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker,” Deadline reported.
The canceled date may also have been tied to James Mangold’s proposed Dawn of the Jedi project, which explores the origins of the Force.

What’s Next for Star Wars Movies?
While Lucasfilm’s decision to delay the December 2026 release isn’t unexpected, it remains a setback for fans. The studio still has a December 17, 2027 release date booked, potentially aligning with A New Hope‘s 50th anniversary. This milestone provides a compelling launchpad for Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order film or other new stories in the galaxy far, far away.

Meanwhile, The Mandalorian & Grogu faces stiff competition in May 2026, releasing alongside Avengers: Doomsday. However, with Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and the beloved Grogu leading the charge, Lucasfilm aims to captivate audiences with its successful characters from Disney+’s flagship series.
