Sydney Sweeney Brushes Off ‘Madame Web’ Criticism
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sweeney addressed the widespread mockery of Madame Web, which has garnered a dismal 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 225 reviews. The actress, who played Julia Cornwall/Spider-Woman in the film, expressed her nonchalance towards the negative reception.
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen,” Sweeney said, dismissing any concerns about the film’s failure.
Sweeney’s indifference towards Madame Web comes amidst a string of successful projects for the actress. She recently starred in the hit romantic comedy Anyone But You alongside Glen Powell, which has earned over $200 million worldwide. Her latest film, Immaculate, also premiered at SXSW, marking her third high-profile release in four months.

Co-star Dakota Johnson Expresses Understanding
While Sweeney brushed off the criticism, her Madame Web co-star Dakota Johnson acknowledged the film’s disappointing reception but expressed understanding towards the situation. In an interview with Bustle, Johnson attributed the movie’s failure to the pitfalls of decision-making by committees rather than individual artists.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,” Johnson said. “It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee.”
