According to Variety, Swift’s new album racked up an astonishing 2.61 million album-equivalent units in its first week, marking the biggest debut for any album in nine years. The last release to achieve a higher figure was Adele’s ’25,’ which bowed with 3.482 million units in 2015.
In addition to its overall impressive debut, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ also set a new record for the highest streaming numbers ever in one week, with a staggering 891.37 million on-demand streams registered. This figure surpasses the previous record held by Drake’s ‘Scorpion,’ which garnered 745.92 million streams in its debut week back in 2018.

Breaking Sales Records
Swift’s dominance extended beyond streaming, as the album also shattered sales records. ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ sold 1.914 million copies in its first week, making it the third-biggest sales figure for any album since accurate sales data tracking began in 1991.
Furthermore, the album sold an unprecedented 859,000 double-LP copies on vinyl, setting a new record for the most vinyl copies sold in a single week in the modern era. This figure surpasses the previous record held by Swift’s own ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version),’ which sold 693,000 vinyl copies last fall.
