How Did Matthew Perry Help Tom Selleck with Chandler’s Iconic Line?
During an interview with USA Today, Tom Selleck recounted how Matthew Perry’s guidance was crucial in delivering one of Chandler Bing’s signature lines. In the Season 2 episode “The One Where Old Yeller Dies,” there is a humorous role reversal where Richard, played by Selleck, tries to emulate Joey and Chandler. This includes Richard attempting to deliver Chandler’s iconic catchphrase, “Could that shot be any prettier?” Selleck struggled with capturing Perry’s distinct delivery.
Selleck explained that Perry had a unique speech pattern that was essential to Chandler’s humor. Recognizing this, Perry patiently coached Selleck on how to say the line, emphasizing that it was all in the delivery.
“Matthew had this speech pattern that I hadn’t been aware of,” Selleck recalled. “Matt told me: ‘It’s a joke, Tom. It’s the way he says it.’ But during that whole show, I kept going up to him asking, ‘Can you say it again?’ and he’d do the line.”
