Why Robert Pattinson’s Batman Isn’t in The Penguin – Explained

Key Points:

  • Robert Pattinson’s Batman is absent from The Penguin to explore a different part of Gotham.
  • The series focuses on Oswald Cobb’s rise in Gotham’s underworld, a place Batman doesn’t patrol.
  • Batman is missing, possibly focusing on Gotham’s recovery after the events of The Batman.

Although The Penguin takes place right after the events of The Batman, Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight is noticeably absent. According to Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald Cobb, Batman won’t be appearing in this series because the story is focused on a different part of Gotham. This area is the underbelly of the city, where Batman doesn’t usually operate. Gotham is huge, and Batman primarily handles crime in the downtown areas where citizens are in immediate danger. The Penguin, on the other hand, dives into places like the slums and the elite suburbs, far from Batman’s usual territory.

In the aftermath of The Batman, Bruce Wayne is likely focusing on larger problems. The Riddler’s attack flooded Gotham’s downtown area, causing destruction, death, and displacement. Batman is probably concentrating his efforts on aiding the recovery, helping citizens, and working with first responders. This aligns with the lesson Bruce learned in the first film — that he can offer more than just vengeance and become a symbol of hope for Gotham. Given the extent of the damage, Batman has other pressing matters to deal with, rather than keeping tabs on a mid-level mobster like Oswald Cobb.

There’s a more interesting reason Batman doesn’t show up in The Penguin — he’s missing. A promotional faux-newspaper suggests that Batman hasn’t been seen in weeks, leaving the city in need of its protector. This could mean that Bruce Wayne is realizing he can have a greater impact on Gotham as Bruce Wayne rather than as Batman. He may be working behind the scenes to ensure that his wealth is properly used to rebuild the city, instead of focusing on street-level crime. As The Penguin progresses, we might see how Batman’s absence affects Gotham and its rising criminal factions.
