How I Met Your Mother, the popular CBS sitcom, ended in 2014 after a remarkable nine-season run. However, one of the most intriguing aspects of the show’s finale was the appearance of Ted Mosby’s children, who hadn’t aged a day since their introduction in the pilot episode.
Why were Ted’s kids’ scenes shot in the first season of How I Met Your Mother?
As it turns out, the actors portraying Ted’s kids, Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie, had filmed their scenes for the finale during the show’s first season back in 2005. The decision to shoot these crucial sequences so early was a strategic move by the creators to ensure continuity.
According to Hollywood Life, Fonseca revealed, “We shot this last little section nine years ago. It was so long ago, I don’t really remember what I said.” This “little section” refers to the pivotal moment when Ted’s children learn the truth about their mother’s identity.
Henrie, who played Luke Mosby, shed further light on the matter. “When we started, I wasn’t even old enough to drive,” he said. “Now, I just bought my first house. I come home . . . and my cousins are watching the show. It is always a funny feeling. They always say, ‘Baby David is on TV!'”
Remarkably, both Fonseca and Henrie managed to keep the show’s ending a closely guarded secret for nearly a decade. Henrie admitted that people often tried to bribe him with alcohol to spill the beans, but he remained tight-lipped.
“People would try and bribe me with all sorts of alcohol, but I kept silent. I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t even tell my mother,” he confessed.

The Necessity of Early Filming
The decision to film the finale scenes with Ted’s children early on was a practical one. As Fonseca explained, “David was growing so fast. He grew like four shoe sizes and his voice dropped, so it was very apparent.”
By capturing their performances during the show’s initial stages, the creators ensured that the characters’ appearances remained consistent throughout the series, even as Fonseca and Henrie underwent the natural changes of aging.
