Zoe Saldaña, a prominent figure in the sci-fi genre, has expressed her desire to play human characters in future projects. Despite her makeup-related concerns, she remains committed to major roles in the Avatar sequels and Star Trek.
Zoe Saldaña’s Desire for a Shift in Sci-Fi Roles
Zoe Saldaña has cemented her status in science fiction with iconic performances, portraying non-human characters such as Neytiri in Avatar and Gamora in the MCU. However, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed a preference for playing humans in future projects, citing the demanding makeup processes required for her alien roles.
“I can’t ever say that I won’t ever go to space. I love being in space. I would like to just be a human in space,” she said. Saldaña elaborated on the physical toll, explaining, “I don’t see myself going through the three to four hours every morning of makeup. I’m so concerned about just the chemicals and stuff that you’re putting into your system for long periods of time, because we shoot these films in a period of five months. But I love science fiction.”
Despite this preference, Saldaña’s commitments to the Avatar sequels indicate she isn’t stepping away from the genre. Her character, Neytiri, will appear in the next installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, scheduled for release in 2025.
